Trial of Faith - Part One

Background Story: (Years Ago/Forever Changed)

So, Awhile back my dad at some point in his life had a minor heart attack and didn't have the slightest idea of when it had taken place or when their issues had actually occurred but little did I know what it would result in down the road. Over the past six months, My dad was not able to walk very far distances when we would go on Sunday walks with my mom and twin sister and if he tried to really exuberant himself with anything such as mowing the lawn or shoveling snow off the sidewalk that it would just make him feel a little more tired than it usually would, but if you are continuing to read through this-- then you pretty much get the idea here right???? He had originally tried to get himself an appointment with the cardiologist back in the spring of this year, but the one he wanted to get into was not able to get him scheduled for about 9 weeks which at the time just seemed like forever until at some point my dad was able to get some help and figure out what was going on with him. It was seriously one of the hardest things for me to see him experience and not having any kind of an idea with expecting to have this be anything short of an "Easy Fix" and simply thought he could try getting a stent put into his heart but since it was so completely closed off, they were not able to make that happen for him and we needed a plan B to go off from.

If you know where I'm gonna be heading with this story here, please don't be afraid to shed a few tears or more just simply because I couldn't keep them back from me either. Let me continue on with the rest of my experience and trying to keep myself together as much as I can without having tears of my own running down my cheeks but I can't necessarily promise that it won't happen while you read through this blog post.

August 25th, 2017 - Temporary Home????

It was literally a complete turn of events when my mom FINALLY came home from being at the hospital with my dad almost all day long, got me and my siblings together in our family room, to discuss what was going on with my dad... which certainly scared me more than ever because I didn't know how I was going to take this news (let alone trying with all of my might and strength to stay positive and yet the teardrops of worry and fear, confusion and uncertainty came along without realizing just what was going to happen here at this very moment. I was in a state of emotional turmoil with having no question in my head as to why this needed to happen to my dad and not having ever had a clue about it whatsoever literally torn me up inside more than most people would think someone like myself could react to something like this. Shortly after we had everybody together and listen to my mom explain to us what was going on, but it seriously made me feel as though things could not have gone anymore difficult than finding out about my dad needing to have Emergency Quadruple Bypass Open Heart Surgery in order to make sure those issues he'd been experiencing for awhile would be taken care of and everything would be okay after several months/weeks/days ahead. They also mentioned to us that they were going to be taking arteries from his arm, leg and chest in order to heal the problems that were taking place for the last little while, which I will admit was quite a shock to me considering that I never would have expected something like that to happen to my dad, but you get the picture here??

It was definitely one of the most challenging experiences in my life that I never saw coming at this time, but I didn't know what to think or say with having expected tears rolling down my face and keeping it together as much as I could possible regardless of whatever was to come from this. It was extremely tough on me to see my father with being on the patient side of things instead of the administrative which I have known him to be a part for about as long as I can remember...but this was SO different from anything that I had ever known to have happen to him before. It was really emotionally heart wrenching for me to walk inside of that hospital & seeing them in their beds, hooked up to these medical beeping noisy machines and trying to recover from whatever it was they were going through at the time... LITERALLY just got me so worried whether as to know just the adventures that were going to lay ahead for me from this point on. But then again, I could not picture myself just going up to people and telling them about it without having the emotions of sadness, worrisome, completely unknowing the outcome of everything and not quite sure if this would be much like anything that I could see myself handling again in the distant future. To be honest with you about all of this, I literally would not have been able to imagine watching my dad and the cardiologist sitting there in the same room and listening to him tell my dad that if it had been his main artery... they simply just said he would've known that's what it was but he wouldn't have been sitting there with him talking about it- I would be telling you a completely different story here right now.

August 26th, 2017 - Sleepless Night/Long Day

Earlier the next morning all of my siblings and I woke up around 7AM because neither one of us was able to get any sleep without thinking about my dad and just what was going to be happening over the next four and a half hours that he would be in surgery. My mom had woken up around 6AM to drive down to the hospital and wishing my dad luck with his operation, but it was not until I woke up not knowing the exact outcome of just everything that I knew was going to leave all of us wondering what to do next.

Both of my other siblings were not as emotional about all of this for reasons that I would never be able to come up with and yet it struck me the hardest to even begin to fathom of my dad having an operation as big as this one. To me on a personal level, it seriously felt like an eternity before we would know anything more about how things went and keeping us updated on what was going to happen from that point on, but who was counting down the hours and minutes????

Later that morning, Cassidy and I were picked up by our neighbor/family friend to head over to this little Ward Relief Society activity but it was completely if not too obvious that everyone there knew what had been going on and I didn't feel a need to mention anything unless I was asked about it by someone. Both of us had a wonderful time with our neighbors and getting to enjoy some fun activities while all of this was going on and trying to keep myself together was not getting any much easier if you can believe it!!! I also forgot to mention that it was my mom's birthday that weekend when we had originally planned to attend the first BYU home football game and then ending up canceling it altogether because of what my dad needed to have taken care of.. which definitely seemed much more of an importance than just going to a sporting event.

Not to even mention that me and my siblings didn't feel the need or energy to sing Happy Birthday to my mom because we were all so stressed out & worried with the situation that was going on with my dad. I really felt like it could have turned out to be a much happier weekend to remember if this was not how things were supposed to be, but I have to believe that Heavenly Father knew what was going on with us and that everything would be okay in the end regardless of anything else that could have happened. I seriously felt like what could have been just a weekend to remember was a completely different experience than I would have least expected.. but having said that, our wonderful and incredible neighbor/close family friend of ours who was also at the Ward Relief Society activity with us drove me and my twin sister Cassidy to buy a little birthday present for my mom, our entire day would have not been nearly as much fun to say the least.

Sunday Morning/Afternoon (August 27th) - Lots of Nerves/Meltdowns/Family Time

My mom, twin sister and I had originally anticipated that we would only attend our ward's sacrament meeting without going to other classes or anything like that. Once we arrived there and got inside, after having sat in the back so we could leave whenever we needed to for anything-- but it literally made me feel like since I'm in the primary that I needed to stick around for class. Within a few minutes of being there, I went into my primary class where I went on explaining this situation to my kids and trying to keep myself very much together as I could without freaking them out in anyway with this news. It was difficult for me to sit there and not have the slightest bit of an idea that things had continued to be the way they ended up being like. Shortly after that was over, I went out to meet my mom and twin sister to go visit with Dad just because we had not seen him since the surgery which I was kind of scared to see him within less than twenty four hours prior to his operation. He looked really good after having eaten a piece of chicken, broccoli and a roll for lunch before we arrived to go visit him in the cardiac ICU for a short period of time before they moved him into where he was going to be staying for the remainder of this hospital visit. It was still extremely difficult for me to not get emotional looking around at the stuff to keep my dad stable and feeling better literally in that moment pierced my heart in a way that I'd never felt before. I couldn't help myself but feel the overwhelming sense of peace that I knew was going to be there as soon as things would get easier from there.

Late Night Together

It was truly a much needed small getaway for me and my twin sister to spend quality time with our aunt and uncle at their new house. My mom drove us all over there and walked inside with us to visit them for a little bit as well as update them on how things were going with my dad at the hospital. Shortly after that, We got to go on a walk with my aunt and uncle around their beautiful neighborhood and getting to see where their neighbors live, which by the way was really incredible if you ask me!!! It was literally nice to have some time out of our house and not just having much to do other than waiting for time to pass till my mom got back to get us, but it was truly so sweet of them to invite us over and spend a couple of hours together. It doesn't necessarily happen all too often for us just because with every thing else that we have going on in life there is never any time to see family and hangout together as much as we would like to before it's too late, if that makes the least bit of sense at all???? We also got to watch one of our most favorite movies ever Napoleon Dynamite and if you ask me and getting to laugh out loud did not seem like the best thing to do when you are watching a movie with other people in the room, but I don't know if our aunt and uncle enjoyed the film because both of us were so loud!! We also learned a brand new game that we had never played before called Spot It! which is basically like you have up to six cards down or ya know whatever with various pictures of "Lady Bugs, Flowers, Snow Flakes, Apples, Trees, Bugs, etc and well you pretty much get the point here right??? We just simply had to match them up with the same exact thing on the cards and you had to try to get as many as we could before time ran out and it was seriously one of the funnest things ever!!!! I am grateful for extended family members who are not only a part of my life but continue to always reach out whenever we need much of anything at some given moment but I love them so much for having us over to spend a few hours with them.

Paradise Vacation

Image result for Ko Olina Lagoon

In the fall of 2013, My family planned a trip to Hawaii for six days and it was truly the best vacation we ever had. It was super exciting for me and my siblings to finally have the chance of going to this island for the very first time!!! I loved exploring around the incredibly amazing beach resort called Ko Olina and being able to see out to all of those four lagoons was just spectacular. I would literally do anything in this world to return back there and vacation for just even a few days let alone maybe even a week if I got lucky!!!

Highlights Included:

Polynesian Cultural Center/Show/Checking out all of the many different islands like: Hawaii, New Zealand, Samoa, Tonga, Tahiti, Fiji, which were super cool and getting to learn things about each of them was pretty incredible!!!

Dole Pineapple Plantation Tour/Pineapple Ice Cream/Pearl Diving from an oyster (Hopefully, when I get to go back in the future I can do it again and bring the treasure home with me!!!)

Visiting the North Shore and trying out the Shaved Ice/Watching the surfers out on the ocean was truly a sight to see!!!! :)

Walking around the Laie, Hawaii Temple Grounds/Visitor's Center

SWAT Meet Outdoor Flea Market (So many Hawaiian treasures to look at and buy if you want to!!)

Duke's Waikiki Restaurant was out of this world phenomenal and just simply delicious!! Not to mention that their Hula Pie is what they are known for.

Snorkeling was definitely one of the many new things that I was able to try on this trip, but never did get to a point of ever being very good at breathing under salt water for long periods of time. Sadly, It was obviously my fault for not having seen all of those beautiful fish swimming in the ocean. There's certainly always next time whenever we get a chance to visit again and check out some more stuff on the different islands. I especially would have loved to climbed Diamond Head which is basically this very old Hawaiian Volcano from what I've heard is really cool, and it would be so much fun to do all of that next time around for sure!!!

Spectacular

There is clearly no words for me to even describe what an incredible treat it was getting to attend this year's Spectacular at the BYU Marriott Center and getting to experience it with ten thousand other people was truly indescribable. The headline performer in the show was truly a delight in every way & getting the chance of seeing them perform LIVE in person was such a treat for me, if you can even imagine just how amazing that is!!! It was definitely phenomenal to watch an Emmy and Tony award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth who played the original role of Glinda, (Good Witch of the North) from the hit popular Broadway musical, WICKED many years back!!!

She interacted with the audience not only just very professional in her demeanor and class, but she delivered a show that I know a lot of you who attended this event will truly remember for years to come!!! I absolutely enjoyed getting the chance to watch someone who I've seen on television for various periods of time, completely became like a dream come true as soon as I saw her perform right on that stage in front of thousands of people!!!! I felt like it was such a surreal and thrilling moment for me to finally see face to face somebody who constantly travels all over the world, doing what they love most certainly turned into just ONE unforgettable night that I will be talking about for many generations to come!!!

My Favorite Highlights:

- WICKED Medley with BYU Vocal Point and Kristin Chenoweth

-  Gentri Performing was such an awesome experience and they were amazingly talented group of singers

-  Watching the BYU Ballroom Dance Company performing their medley and luckily, I had seen it multiple times!!! #JustSaying

- Wished I had gotten a picture with the star of this fantastic show and you know, maybe one day it will  happen but who knows????

- Listening to Kristin Chenoweth tell Cosmo, the cougar that there is only room for one cougar on that stage-- but hey... come on, He is practically legit in every way and he is a pretty cool dude to say the least!!! Believe me, it's absolutely true!!!! :)

Latest Updates

A New Beginning

It has definitely been a much happier week for me with the regards of what happened prior to me, returning back over to the elementary school this coming year. I am incredibly grateful for the many people who have continued to watch out for me every week, and I feel so blessed to be back at a place where I can reconnect with my former students. I have loved being a part of this wonderful school for the past seven years and getting the chance to learn from the teachers that I have had the privilege to work with has been nothing short of a dream come true!!! Over these many years, they have taught me so much more than I ever thought was possible for an individual like myself who has the struggles they have and feel so immensely blessed by their goodness/examples to me!!! Stay tuned later on for more updates and stories throughout this school year to come in the many months/weeks ahead!!!! :)

Self Advocacy Speakers Network - Third Presentation: SDM

NEXT MONTH---I will be doing a another presentation with this remarkable network and sharing my message of hope with so many people around our state of Utah. We are going to be presenting to a group of staff at one of the many independent living centers in Salt Lake City, Utah at 9AM and cannot wait to let them know what it is that we do to make our voices heard despite what many other people think. I'm super thrilled to be a part of this network and having the chance-- to learn so many things from them as well as what it is we are going to share with them. I know it has been such a long time since I last presented this subject to a group of people just like myself who need to be educated on various things that are important to us each and everyday!!!

New Era Article - February 2011

As many of you know this article came out in the New Era Magazine several years ago, and it was supposed to be about the first year of when my older sister created her Special Needs Ballroom Event. All of us who were participating got interviewed by this intern for the magazine and asked us various questions--- specifically on how this event truly came to be what it is today. I definitely shared a lot more information during those interviews than what you'd probably see inside of the article, but it was such a treat getting to feel somewhat or if not kinda "famous" for a period of time!!! And if you would like me to autograph it for anyone of you reading through this blog post, I would be more than happy to do that at any given moment ;) It is truly such an incredible article and one that I'll admit will or maybe not bring a happy tear to your eye for some reason or other.

Other Life Update:

One of the many life updates that I have continued to neglect sharing on my blog for quite awhile and just never really knew how to explain it. I know for a lot of people it is truly just the most thrilling announcement somebody can make and have this thrill of excitement inside them, but for me I am still trying to figure this stuff out in my mind for the next little while. I've been volunteering at a local elementary school for the past seven years and a person like me whose absolutely loved it more than anything in this world, you would think for me that can be a very simple adjustment for me to not feel uncomfortable with. I definitely know that after hearing people tell me just the experience of what it is really like and how great I will be than there is no other choice left, expect to just slowly begin changing my attitude about it and just go along with it. In other words, I am going to be an aunt in the spring of 2018 and to be honest about all of this-- I can't really find the words to know what to say/feel/understand/respond or think in just how much fun this experience is going to be. I know it seems like such a big transition for me right now and then once it gets closer, I will probably have a better idea of things and just realizing that this isn't what I had expected to hear... because after seeing my older sister married for six years that they would already have kids by now. I am fairly certain things will get easier as time goes on and trying not to overthink everything in my head or else it could easily become a lot harder than it really should be. #HopeForTheBest

Back To School . . . One Month Later

I know that most of you were probably not all too happy about school starting up... but if you know me, I am more than just super excited to return back-- but getting to do something that I love with all my heart.

I'm super thrilled to be announcing my return back to Westridge Elementary School this coming year and I honestly couldn't be more excited!!! I have really learned to love the school, working with their amazing students and faculty over these many years... but it has certainly turned into a wonderful/life changing experience for me. I love helping kids with anything that they need help with and getting to work with some of the best teachers ever has continued to be such a privilege. I know that this school year started a month ago, but since things in my life kind of got put to the side for awhile-- I've had to keep my focus on that and get myself together after everything that has happened. I cannot wait to get back into the classroom with my new to be third grade students and having an opportunity to help out one of my many favorite teachers!!!! I will also be helping out in a first grade classroom again this yr and I am thrilled to be meeting some new people, (hopefully they will enjoy having me in their class as well as getting better acquainted with them too!)

It's certainly been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life and I can't wait to do something that I not only love more than anything-- but sharing it with so many people!!! This will be my 8TH year as a volunteer at the Elementary School and I know it's been a very long time, but so worth it in the sense of everything that this experience has taught me. I have absolutely grown & learned lots of things from having been doing this for as long as I have... but seriously though, I love kids and can't wait to be in their presence again!!!!

When I started this experience SEVEN YEARS AGO--- I never thought of myself being very good at helping with first grade students let alone kids for that matter, but it has continued to be such a fun & amazing experience for me. I'm grateful for the happiness and joy that they continue to bring into my life on a regular basis, but having said that-- I know that my life has never been the same and I can't wait to learn more from them during our time together.

Free Write

Image result for Faith it till you make it

I came across this wonderful quote a few weeks ago, on my Facebook News Feed and ever since then it has continued to really stand out to me. I know that having reflected on this for the last little while, it has continued to make me really think about how important it really is to have faith in our Savior, Jesus Christ regardless of whatever situation we are facing. I feel so blessed to have the gospel in my life everyday and to know with a certainty that we'll not ever be given something that my Heavenly Father wouldn't be too easy or hard for any one of us to deal with.

At one time in your lives or another, you have heard the phrase: "Fake it till you make it." and to me this never really made sense in the back of my mind about the emphasis behind what it truly means. I know for me if there was something I had been struggling with in my own life and tried to do whatever I could to "Fake it till I made it to the end and was able to look forward with my head held high... than that is probably what I would have chosen to do instead of just simply doing what I know will help me through any situation. It is simply just amazing to met hat until I saw this quote on Facebook and thought of just how much more important it is to never give up on ourselves (let alone our Savior to help guide/direct us on the straight and narrow path of where we need to be.)

Untitled Post

I'm sorry for neglecting to update my blog within the last couple of weeks, but so much has taken place in the last couple of weeks that I haven't really felt like writing too much. This last week I attended a camp out with my independent living center as well as a other one from the Salt Lake area and to be honest with you, I didn't really know if I was going to do it or not--because of everything that has been going on in my life... but it certainly seemed like a good way to get out of the house and spend time with my friends who I really ever see that often. I'm not necessarily much of a camper myself but getting to do it with other people just made it a little more relaxing for me and I am grateful that I was able to be a part of it. Despite a little bit of rainfall that we had to endure while being there, all of us enjoyed spending time together as well as getting to do some arts/crafts which I will say were actually pretty fun (since there was not a lot of activities planned expect for just laying back and hanging out with everyone who was there.) I really liked being able to meet some new people and reunite with some of the friends that I've known for the last couple of years (due to other activities that I have been able to participate in with them.) It was a little hard not being able to see some of my other friends that I wished had been there with us, but in the end I felt really grateful to be a part of this one and enjoy some time away from the chaos and busy things we all have to do in our lives everyday.

Special Needs Institute

My twin sister and I started attending special needs institute at Utah Valley University awhile back, just so we could do something together and get my twin sister out of the house for a little bit during the day. It has definitely been such a wonderful thing to be a part of and getting to learn about the gospel has made me really feel more blessed to have something in my life that reminds me of why I'm here on this earth. I greatly miss our previous legit institute teacher more than anything in this world and getting to learn from her was such an incredible experience for me that I will cherish for the rest of my life!!! I am looking forward to what this new semester has in store for us and cannot wait to learn more about what I can do to live a more happier life each day...but we'll see what happens & how things will turn out for us from here.

Westridge Elementary School Carnival 2017

One of my neighbors posted on our ward's facebook page that they needed extra volunteers to help out with activities going on at the elementary school's carnival & my mom asked if I would be more than willing to help out with it. I was definitely indeed more than thrilled to do whatever needed to be done and getting that chance to see some of my former students again was super fun for me!!!! I actually got to help out with one of the many games that were taking place & somehow it ended up being the most popular for the kids to play... which kind of surprised me considering how much other stuff was going on there at the same time. I really hoped to have run into both of the teachers I was going to be working alongside with this year and getting the chance to talk to them about things, but I'm kind of thinking both of them must have left home before I showed up to do what I was asked to help out with. It was a little bit of a bummer and considering the fact, if I'd been there earlier in the afternoon I would have run into them but no worries-- I had a lot of things on my mind & just needed to focus on what I was there to assist with. Overall, I was grateful for the experience more than anything else in this world & having the chance to do something fun instead of just chilling all over around my house for an entire night-- but I loved every single minute of it more than I could even put into words right now. I'm anxious to get back over to the elementary school and begin my official volunteering duties again in both of the classrooms I hope to be of assistance in this coming year!!!
